Strawberries & Pineapple

strawberryandpineapple

The garden strawberry is a widely grown hybrid species of the genus Fragaria. It is cultivated worldwide for its fruit. The fruit is widely appreciated for its characteristic aroma, bright red color, juicy texture, and sweetness.   Strawberries are cheap at the moment here “Down Under” ( Australia ) at Coles!

Well, I didn’t measure the weight of the Strawberry above, but below is a photo of it in my hand, showing its size.  I ate it with pieces of fresh pineapple, and quite enjoyed it.

Big Strawberry

The pineapple is a tropical plant with edible multiple fruit consisting of coalesced berries, and the most economically significant plant in the Bromeliaceae family.  Like Strawberries, Pineapples are high in Vitamin C.  Bromelain is found in pineapples as a complex mixture of substances that can be extracted from the stem and core fruit of the pineapple.   Bromelain is said to aid digestion and to help curb excessive inflammation, excessive coagulation of the blood, and certain types of tumor growth, when taken as a dietary supplement.

Pineapple is an excellent source of the trace mineral manganese, which is an essential cofactor in a number of enzymes important in energy production and antioxidant defenses.  It is also a good source of dietary fibre.  In Australia, pineapples are generally available all year round with the best value being from November to February. Major growing regions within Australia include South East Queensland, particularly the Sunshine Coast hinterlands.

Be warned though:  for some people the bromelain in fresh pineapple can burn the lips, which is rather unpleasant.  If you are one of these people, you could still eat grilled pineapple!
